Top Flagship phones

Top phones from Top brands 2017

The top phones currently available in 2017  from all major phone brands are going to be  in this list. There are a multitude of phones in the market and its hard to keep track of all of them when it  seems like every other phone has the same megapixel count, the same Quad core processor among other things so it’s easy to get confused between a midrange phone and a flagship phone when you are on the lookout for the best currently available .This guide will list the most prominent phones in the market which are or should be widely available with your local retailer with a brief summary about the specs and if it’s worth your hard earned cash.

Samsung

Samsung Galaxy S8

Samsung Galaxy S8

Samsung Galaxy S8+

Samsung Galaxy S8+

The latest Samsung phones which have been announced and soon to be released in April. Both the 5.8-inch S8 and the 6.2-inch S8+ will come with either a Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 835 or Exynos 8895 Octa chipset depending on the region but both will suffice for more than enough computing power as these are the latest chipsets and should be neck and neck with each other in terms of performance and both would edge out the Kirin 960 in a performance shootout but not by much .An 8 megapixel in the front and 12 megapixel at the back will have you covered for taking good pictures which should be class leading but we would have preferred atleast a 16 megapixel sensor  as the same sensor carries over from the S7 edge. Samsung has done away with the physical Home button in the front so the front is all screen with a less than common 18.5:9 aspect ratio which is taller than the  16:9 ratio which is the common resolution in most of the other phones. The screen resolution is 1440 x 2960 pixels (~570 ppi pixel density) for S8.The S8+ also has the same resolution but with less ppi as the screen is bigger but the quality difference should be hard to discern if not at all. Both the screens  should be exceptional and the new bezel less design looks amazing even though we are not huge fans of curved screens which seems to be the norm for samsung flagships currently.

Google

Google Pixel

Google pixel

Google Pixel XL

Google Pixel XL

The Pixel and Pixel XL are googles attempt at competing with the top flagships and the Pixel marked a serious entry into the premium flagship segment. Lack of wide availability and high pricing might have dented Googles chances at making serious inroads in the market but there is no doubt that the Pixel phones have made a shout than a whimper. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 was the best chipset when Google released the phone last year and still remains a formidable force even though it is less powerful than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 8895 Octa chipset or the  Huawei Kirin 960  but that doesn’t mean you will be short of power anytime soon  as a Snapdragon 821  can handle anything and everything you throw at it and is also used in the LG G6 which was released in March 2017.The 12.3 MP Camera (Sony Exmor IMX378 sensor) at the back is hailed by many reviewers as one of  the best camera ever built on a smartphone and the front 8 megapixel is worthy enough to take your selfies .The Pixel is a Full HD 1080 x 1920  5-inch display (~441 ppi pixel density) while the Pixel XL is with a higher resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels (~534 ppi pixel density) and a larger 5.5-inch screen. Google phones are also the first to receive Android updates before the Samsung’s, Huawei’s , LG’s or any other manufacturer which build’s Android phones so there is no waiting time for when a new OS update is released and the OS used is plain Android with no custom phone manufacturer skins or add-ons.

OnePlus One

OnePlus 3T

oneplus 3t

OnePlus 3T  is the updated version of the OnePlus 3 which was a well respected phone with flagship specs. The OnePlus 3T ups the ante even further and  is a significant phone in its own right and worthy of competing with the best flagships out there in all aspects. The screen is a Full HD 1080 x 1920 pixels (~401 ppi pixel density)  display which is respectable and the software used is Oxygen OS which is an open source software on top of Android with good community support and frequent updates .The chipset is the formidable Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 821   which has been succedded by the Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 835 but the Snapdragon 821 will not leave you wanting for more power as it is a flagship chipset. The 16 megapixel back camera is a good shooter  and it also has a 16 megapixel front camera which is not common in flagships which is a welcome addition .Build quality is top notch full metal design which is expected nowadays in all flagship phones.Well the main thing which makes this phone stand out even further  is the price. This phone undercuts top flagships by atleast 300 dollars and provides almost flagship level specs and performance which is a boon to the consumer and its only weakpoint maybe lack of brand awareness but that shouldn’t come in the way of what is otherwise an exceptional phone.

Sony

Sony Xperia XZ

Sony Xperia XZ

A little small in size than the typical flagship with 5.2-inch Full  HD display which is more than enough for a small screen as more resolution might just be overkill. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset powers the phone which is no slouch by any means and should make short work of anything you throw at it eventhough the Snapdragon 835 is currently in the market.23 megapixel back camera and 13 megapixel for selfies should be enough for your picture taking compulsion but even with the high megapixel count and loads of camera features Sony phone cameras are still not hailed as benchmark setters even with Sony having its own Camera Sensor business with many of its competitors using it on their flagship phones. The body looks beautiful but a little awkward to grasp because of the dimensions of the phone and the huge bezels at the top and bottom might look a little ugly in comparison to a Galaxy S8 or LG G6.Sony’s interface on top of Android is a hit or miss affair as it feels bland and minimalistic with nothing to standout and one would wonder with all Sony’s resources and expertise with PlayStation OS  as to why they cant come up with an intuitive user  interface. We had recommend buying this phone only with a huge price cut.

HTC

HTC U Ultra

The current top spec HTC phone with a  5.7-inch 1440 x 2560 pixels QHD Screen (~513 ppi pixel density). The phone also has a secondary screen like a strip at the top which can be set to always on and shows your notifications among other things similar to the LG V20.Released in Feb 2017 with a Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 821 ticking inside it is no short in power even though the latest Snapdragon 835 is not in the phone, a Snapdragon 821 is flagship grade and worthy for a top phone.12 megapixel snapper at the back and 16 megapixel in the front will output crisp and class leading photos .Battery capacity at 3000 mAh is good enough to last all day and the only drawback maybe the build quality which might be hit or miss with the consumers as the full glass build might not feel as sturdy as other all metal flagship phones. Also note that HTC U ultra doesn’t come with a head phone jack and you will be using the USB-C port in other words you will be inserting  USB-C compatible headphones in your charging port.

Apple

iPhone 7

iphone 7

iPhone 7 plus

iphone 7 plus

What’s there to say about the ubiquitous Apple  iPhone which you don’t already know. The latest being the iPhone 7 with a 4.7 inch  750 x 1334px resolution(326ppi) display and iPhone 7 Plus with a 5.5 inch (401ppi)  Full HD 1080p resolution display  and with  Apple’s  custom chipset A10 Fusion powering both phones it completely blows away the competition in performance benchmarks. The iPhone 7 comes with 2 GB and the iPhone 7 Plus comes with 3GB of RAM. Apple’s cameras have always been highly regarded and the back 12 megapixel and 7 megapixel  in the front take beautiful pictures for both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus . The iPhone 7 Plus has two cameras in the rear, one for taking normal pictures and the other exclusively for taking pics with a professional camera background effect which is called a ‘bokeh’ where the background is blurred with the subject in focus. The Apple appstore has quality apps and iPhones thrive in Apple’s closed ecosystem but a newcomer making the jump from Android might take a little time in getting to grips with Apples way of doing things with things like iTunes syncing ,uploading Videos on to the phone, browsing files among many other things is a little different than what they are used to doing on android.Dont go for the 32 GB as Full HD videos, Camera pictures and 3D games among many other things pile up quickly on your phone and there is no SD card slot on an iPhone when you run short of space.

LG

LG G6

lg G6

LG’s latest 5.7 inch flagship comes with a 1440 x 2880 pixels resolution(~564 ppi pixel density) and powered by a Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 821 processor which was the top snapdragon before it was succeeded by Snapdragon 835.The screen is  superb and comes with a new 18:9 resolution due to the screen being taller so all apps have to be updated by developers for scaling to the new aspect ratio which should happen eventually. The back has two 13 megapixel sensors one for wide angle shots and one sensor for taking normal pictures while the front has a 5 megapixel selfie cam. The back 13 megapixel sensor for normal pics has a faster aperture f1.8 which should be your main camera .4GB of RAM is more than enough for a flagship phone so anything more than 4GB is overkill.LG isn’t touting this phone as a flagship but this is the phone with the best specs in LG’s line up .LG’s custom interface on top of android is easy on the eye and the new design is more in line with how  premium phones should look like.

Huawei

Huawei Mate 9

Huawei mate 9

Huawei has many phones with high end specs and Mate 9 is the one to look for if you want a 5.9 inch screen .It comes with a Full HD resolution when most of the new phones have moved on from Full HD and are implementing Quad HD but that is not to say the Screen is lacking as it is simply Gorgeous to look at and might be the optimal choice for good battery life and perormance. It comes with a kirin 960 chipset which is the latest Huawei chipset exclusive for Huawei phones and one of the best performers in phone benchmarks.Build quality is top notch All metal design but Software UI might be a matter of taste as Huawei’s custom interface might not suit everyone’s taste.20 megapixel camera  at the back and 8mp camera for selfies have got you covered for taking quality pics and the Mate 9 comes with 64GB as default which is not bad.

Huawei P10

huawei p10

Same resolution as the Mate 9 which is Full HD but since its a smaller 5.1 inch screen the pixel density will be higher which means better quality on a smaller screen. The same Kirin 960 chipset is also used on this phone which means Mate 9 and P10 performance should be similiar as Kirin 960 is one of the best performing chipset in the market so you are well covered in the performance department.Build quality is top notch for the P10 similiar to the Mate 9 which is an All metal design .20 megapixel camera  at the back and 8 megapixel camera for selfies have got you covered for taking quality pics and the P10 comes with 32GB as default.Comes with Android 7.0 Noughat which is the latest version currently available.

Huawei P10 Plus

Huawei p10 plus

Same Kirin 960  chipset like the other Huawei flagships but here you get a better display then the Mate 9 which is 1440 x 2560 pixels (~540 ppi pixel density)and a camera which has a new algorithm for taking better  pictures. With an All metal sleek body this is a serious contender for a flagship if not for the really high asking price which Huawei  is asking for the P10 Plus. So if and when the price comes down near the level of Mate 9 then the P10 plus will be an excellent choice but for now the Mate 9 will do well enough.
