Keep in mind that a chipset is not the be all and end all when deciding on the performance of a phone as even a mid range chipset with well optimized software can provide a good user experience. With that in mind have a look at the prominent chipsets in the market.
Huawei Kirin 960
This is a custom made chip by Huawei which is the most powerful chipset available . The catch is this chipset will only come in a Huawei phone and it is currently available in the Huawei Mate 9 which is a formidable flagship phone if you don’t mind the custom Huawei made skin on top of Android Nougat.
Samsung Exynos 8 Octa 8890
This chipset performs just below the Kirin 960 and powers the current generation of Samsung flagship phones namely the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge. This is the most powerful chipset being produced by Samsung which is going to be superseded by the Exynos 9 8895 which should power the next generation of Samsung flagship phones.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 820
The most widely used chipset by phone manufacturers for their flagship phones including Samsung and all other manufacturers who don’t design and manufacture their own chipset. This was the top performing and most widely available chipset in the mobile market before being superseded by the Snapdragon 821.The Snapdragon 820 is used in Samsung Galaxy S7, LG V20,LG G5 to name a few.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 821
This is QUALCOMM’s flagship chipset with a minor performance bump over the Snapdragon 820.The OnePlus 3T ,Google Pixel and Xiaomi Mi Note 2 are the popular phones which have Snapdragon 821 Add to dictionary flagship phone the G6 will also feature this chipset once the phone is released. The upcoming Snapdragon 835 which will feature in the soon to be announced Samsung S8 will supersede the Snapdragon 821.
Mediatek Helio X25
One of the best performing mobile chipset but without the marketing power of a QUALCOMM or an EXYNOS. Notable phones with this chipset are the Meizu pro 6 ,Meizu pro 6s and Xiaomi Redmi pro.Performs just below the Kirin 960 and neck and neck with the Snapdragon 821 and Exynos 8 Octa 8890.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 and Qualcomm 652
The performance of these chipsets are similar with the 625 edging out the 652 by a small margin. The performance is not significantly less from a flagship chipset but you should probably find these chipsets in midrange handsets. If the price of your phone is around $300 with either of these chipsets than you can be sure that your phone will be no slouch in the performance department.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 650
Almost 25 to 30 percent below the Snapdragon 625 and 652,this chipset performs considerably less than the aforementioned processors .
